CAD for days …

I hadn’t gotten very far into the process of putting the radio interface together when I hit my first problem. I’d purchased a dual rotary encoder with the hopes of using it as a frequency selector. I wired it up as suggested, and it worked briefly before one stopped working entirely and the other skipped forward or backward randomly. I tried rewiring, swapping pins in both the code and on the microcontroller, trying different pieces of code … nothing worked. I eventually sent the encoder back to the company for…read more

As a pilot, it is my responsibility to be current in all of the tasks required for the safe operation of an aircraft. To ensure that this happens safely and consistently, the FAA put together criteria that must be met in order to be considered legal and current. These requirements get even more stringent when dealing with instrument flying. When you are flying in bad weather conditions, and you only have your instruments to guide you, being current in your knowledge of your flying platform and operating within the national airspace…read more

Getting a bit more involved …

(Update: It was made known to me that it might not be clear what a Stratux is. It’s a device that among other things the ADS-B system provides, allows you to receive weather from ground based stations and traffic from both the ground based stations and other aircraft around you with ADS-B out. It was created by Christopher Young along with a team of volunteers who put the plans for making your own out on the internet. Making your own cost less than $200 compared to the $600 for commercial…read more

Working with electronics has always been a passion of mine. It’s something I’ve shown interest in from a very young age. I would take apart broken toys (and some not very broken ones) and use the parts to build new and interesting things. My parents weren’t always very happy with what I built, as apparently I didn’t have much regard for my own safety. I remember building an air conditioning unit from old computer cooling fans, a large liquid detergent bottle and loads of ice. It worked quite well but my…read more

I used to be a blogger once …

Once, I set out on a journey to become a better writer. I thought to myself what better way to do so than to write about flying. After all … it is my passion and I already eat, breathe and dream about it … I should never be short of things to write about. And so while conveniently forgetting what became of all of my previous blogging attempts, I began putting together this blog. It went well for about a year … I started building a small following of interested…read more

Headin’ West – Day Four

Posted by in ACRE, Flying

Woke up and had a look at the weather only to find something rather annoying. There was a band of Bad weather (mostly low clouds) between my destination and me. It was forecasted to be clear at the photo site but I’d still need to get there. Figuring that I should at least attempt to get close so that I would be nearer to the site, I prepared the plane and was airborne shortly after. As I continued in the flight I found that the weather was exceptionally clear and…read more

Author Note: Sadly I lost all of the pictures I took during this mission so the following posts will sadly not be accompanied with many pictures if any. Additionally these post were originally written several months back. I am only getting to post them now. Woke up this morning ready to head to north east Iowa (sort of) and found nothing but storms … storms everywhere. Seeing that I wouldn’t be able to do anything over there I realized I would be stuck until tomorrow. By this point after two…read more

Headin’ West – Day Two

Author Note: Sadly I lost all of the pictures I took during this mission so the following posts will sadly not be accompanied with many pictures if any. Additionally these post were originally written several months back. I am only getting to post them now. Woke up bright and early and prepared to do another long day of flying. To be honest I’m not much of a coffee person (never really could stand the taste … love the smell though) but this morning was definitely a coffee morning. My host…read more

Author Note: Sadly I lost all of the pictures I took during this mission so the following posts will sadly not be accompanied with many pictures if any. This post was also written a while ago and I’m only just getting to post it now. For some time now our boss had spoken about the prospect of having some clients out in the Nebraska area. We were pretty excited, as neither Shane nor myself have flown out in that area before. However as with many things, life got fairly busy…read more

Hey I can see Canada from here … No wait … That’s Michigan

For some reason one of our more anticipated routes had been eluding us for weeks. It was one of the longer ones and would take us all the way up into central Wisconsin. However it seemed as though the weather was conspiring against us in every way possible. It would either be really bad here and we couldn’t leave (our aircraft are only legal to operate under Visual Flight Rules or VFR so we can’t go into clouds or low visibility conditions. That aside taking pictures from inside of a…read more
